Program Summary

Ayo Main is a program developed in partnership between PeaceGen and UNDP to implement school-based interventions using a comprehensive approach across all participating schools.

Program Objectives

The program aims to build resilience among all school staff in efforts to prevent intolerance and violent extremism, based on the principles of human security.

Program Background

Indonesia is a diverse country, rich in ethnic groups, religions, cultures, and languages. However, the challenges of intolerance and violent extremism can lead to long-term social insecurity.

Despite various prevention efforts, studies show that intolerant views persist among students, both towards followers of the same religion and different religions. There is also resistance to differences among teachers, particularly regarding issues related to the construction of places of worship and leadership by individuals of different faiths.

Methods and Approach

Ayo Main focuses on promoting tolerance through examples set within schools. Through this program, PeaceGen, in collaboration with UNDP, intervened in 4 elementary schools in Sumenep District and 2 elementary schools in Malang District, East Java.

The program includes both online and offline activities using feeling boards, training sessions, modules, and board games as tools to build resilience within schools to prevent intolerance and violent extremism.

Program Results

By the end of the program, all school participants gained a better understanding of the importance of tolerance. Through the feeling board game, they were able to identify their own feelings and demonstrate mutual respect among students and teachers.
