Highlight
Peace Camp Makassar was created in response to the bombing incident at the Cathedral Church in Makassar and produced 700 peace agents through this activity.
Program Overview
Peace Camp is a program designed to provide a platform for young people in Makassar to learn about the 12 Basic Values of Peace and become Agents of Peace (AoP). This program was held three times, targeting different participants: Peace Camp for university students, Training Peace for Educators for teachers from various schools, and Peace Camp for high school students.
Program Objectives
The Peace Camp Makassar program aims to promote inclusivity, tolerance, and respect for diversity.
Program Background
In 2021, a bombing incident occurred at a place of worship in Indonesia. The explosion took place in front of Makassar Cathedral Church after the Palm Sunday Mass, injuring several churchgoers and damaging nearby vehicles.
This tragic event highlighted the urgent need to instill peace values by encouraging individuals to become Agents of Peace (AoP)—advocates for religious tolerance, inclusivity, and respect for diversity.
As a response, Peace Camp was initiated to cultivate a peaceful mindset among participants, empowering them to spread these values to others.
Methods and Approach
Peace Camp is part of peace education, where participants undergo training to learn about the 12 Basic Values of Peace. They are then given a mission to become AoPs by:
-
Writing a Story of Change (SoC)
-
Creating social media content
-
Spreading peace values to 30 people, both online and offline
This program was conducted from 2021 to 2022 in Makassar, focusing on a 3-day training on the 12 Basic Values of Peace to encourage young people to actively promote peace. Participants came from diverse religious backgrounds, with the majority being Muslims and Christians.
Program Impact
-
100 participants successfully became Agents of Peace (AoP)
-
600 individuals became Peace People, individuals who learned the 12 Basic Values of Peace from AoPs
Testimonial
"I learned so many new things during the training, met new friends, and found a new family—people who are enthusiastic about listening and embracing others. We all come from different backgrounds, yet this experience left a profound impact on me. I believe that peace can spread and serve as motivation for a better nation and society." — Aisyah, Peace Camp Makassar Participant
