Teacher’s Story: How Rega Nugraha Prevents Digital Threats in Islamic Boarding Schools

PeaceGen.ID – The rise of digital-based cases has become a significant challenge for educators. Mr. Rega Nugraha, an Informatics teacher at MAS AL MUTAWALLY a pesantren (Islamic boarding school) based madrasah in Kuningan, West Java is among those facing this head-on. He observes that digital threats do not only target schools where students use mobile phones daily but also extend into the pesantren environment.

While students in the pesantren are not permitted to use mobile phones on campus, the challenge arises when they go home for school holidays. Mr. Rega is deeply concerned with ensuring his students maintain social media ethics even when they are away from direct supervision.

"It’s not about forbidding students from using technology, but accompanying them so they can utilize technology wisely and ethically," said speaker Fikri Suhardi, S.Pd., during a webinar with PeaceGen.

This proactive journey began when Mr. Rega was appointed as the school’s systems operator. This mandate was both good news and a challenge. Noticing that both students and teachers lacked deep knowledge of digital literacy, he became determined to increase his capacity to help the school create a digitally safe environment.

Mr. Rega has followed PeaceGen’s journey since 2019, starting from a meeting with "Kang Irfan" at a Youth Peacetival. Seven years later, he found a webinar program perfectly suited to his current needs: digital literacy for teachers and students.

"Soon, 12th graders will undergo the university enrollment process, from SNBT (National Selection Based on Testing) to independent exams. I need to pass on knowledge about digital literacy to them, specifically regarding cyber hygiene," he explained.

Beyond the students, the condition of the teaching staff is also a priority. As a school operator, Mr. Rega is often the first person people turn to for digital issues. Reported problems range from hacked WhatsApp accounts to data security issues, such as a lack of understanding regarding Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). Previously, he relied solely on searching for digital literacy information through various social media platforms.

However, after attending the PeaceGen webinar, Mr. Rega realized the materials provided were highly beneficial for the school:

"I feel that if schools, especially in West Java, were aware of PeaceGen's webinars, they would become much 'cleaner' digitally," he remarked.

Topics such as cyber hygiene, cyberbullying, and 2FA were presented in a way that was relevant, applicable, and engaging. According to him, PeaceGen consistently finds ways to make activities meaningful yet fun one example being the use of the "Romi Remuk" game.

"At the start, there was a game called 'Romi Remuk,' and we were invited to dissect a bullying case in an enjoyable way. The webinar was very vibrant, fun, and far from boring," he added.

As an appreciation for his participation, Mr. Rega received a copy of the 12 Basic Values of Peace curriculum module. Following the webinar, he plans to share his newfound digital literacy knowledge with the school, starting with the 12th graders this term and moving to the rest of the school community next semester.

In addition to digital literacy, as a Scout leader (Pembina Pramuka), Mr. Rega intends to integrate the 12 Basic Values of Peace (12 NDP) curriculum into scouting activities.

"Coincidentally, I received the 12 NDP book from the webinar. My follow-up plan is to integrate that curriculum into Scouting. I believe Scouting is a very effective medium to instill these values so that digital literacy and peace aren't just classroom theories, but become characters they practice daily," said Mr. Rega.

Through teacher capacity-building programs like this webinar, PeaceGen hopes to continue collaborating with educators to build school environments that are safe, comfortable, joyful, and better prepared for digital threats.

"The theme really broadened our horizons, and the speakers were extraordinary. Yesterday's event was truly top-notch," he concluded.
