Ruang Damai

About the Project
Ruang Damai partnered with PeaceGen in an effort to build social harmony and improve community well-being through peace education at the Correctional Facilities (LAPAS). In this initiative, PeaceGen provided the 12 Basic Values of Peace training to raise awareness and equip participants with skills to foster positive peace within LAPAS.
Goal
This collaboration aims to:
-
Help Correctional Students (Andikpas) understand the broader concept of peace.
-
Instill peace values in their daily lives.
-
Develop skills in conflict management and build more harmonious relationships within LAPAS.
Background of the Collaboration
The COVID-19 pandemic, which began in March 2020, had far-reaching effects, including how individuals understand and practice peace. Peace is now viewed not only as the absence of conflict but also as social well-being and a better quality of life.
Johan Galtung, a Norwegian sociologist and the founder of peace studies, emphasized that building societal harmony is an essential part of creating positive peace. In line with this idea, Ruang Damai initiated a project to bring humanistic values into LAPAS as a concrete step toward building a more peaceful and prosperous society.
To commemorate World Peace Day, Ruang Damai organized a workshop titled "Planting Peace Values as a Preventive Measure in Handling Conflict and Religious Moderation at LPKA DKI Jakarta." To strengthen the impact of this workshop, Ruang Damai collaborated with PeaceGen to provide the 12 Basic Values of Peace training to the Andikpas.
Method and Approach
The 12 Basic Values of Peace training for Andikpas was delivered through the following approach:
-
Interactive sessions that raised their awareness of the importance of peace in everyday life.
-
Group discussions to help participants understand the diversity of ethnic groups, communities, and perspectives in society.
-
Personal reflection to instill peace values and apply them in social interactions.
-
Case simulations that provided hands-on experience in resolving conflicts peacefully.
Impact and Results
This collaboration provided training to 77 Andikpas at LPKA DKI Jakarta, from various socio-economic backgrounds and legal cases, including theft, drugs, harassment, and even murder. Through the training, the Andikpas gained new insights on:
-
The concept of peace in everyday life.
-
How to understand and appreciate diversity in their environment.
-
Strategies for managing conflicts and building more harmonious relationships.
-
The importance of self-love as the first step toward creating peace with others.
This training left a profound impact on the participants, who felt more valued and gained a new perspective on living peacefully amidst the challenges they face.
Testimonial
“I never thought peace begins with myself. After attending this training, I realized that loving myself is important, and it can help me face life better.” – Andikpas Participant
