Collaboration and Joint Commitment in Preventing Violent Extremism in West Java Province

Peacegen.id - The development of violent extremism in Indonesia shows complex dynamics, marked by the significantly increasing involvement of women. Their role is not only as perpetrators, but potentially involves children and creates layered threats. In response to these dynamics, PeaceGeneration Indonesia, in collaboration with AMAN Indonesia and the Bakesbangpol of West Java Province, and supported by UN Women Indonesia, organized a Lokakarya: Aplikasi Panduan Penilaian Sensitif Gender dalam Pencegahan Ekstremisme Kekerasan bagi Pokja RAD PE Provinsi Jawa Barat.

This workshop aimed to introduce and discuss the Gender Sensitivity Guidelines, critically analyze and assess the Regional Action Plan (RAD) for Extremism Prevention, and formulate strategies for implementing gender-sensitive RAN/RAD PE. It was intended for all stakeholders, both at national and regional levels, for the prevention and mitigation of violent extremism.

The workshop was held for 2 days and was attended by 29 members of the RAD PE Working Group, consisting of representatives from regional government organizations and Civil Society Organizations. PeaceGeneration Indonesia and AMAN Indonesia served as facilitators in this workshop. Also participating was the Head of the National Unity and Politics Agency (Bakesbangpol) of West Java Province, H. Khoirul Naim. S.K.M., M.Epid, who was part of the speakers along with Siti Kholifah from FISIP Universitas Brawijaya, and Ghufron from AMAN Indonesia.

"I highly appreciate the multi-stakeholder collaboration from Bakesbangpol, PeaceGen, AMAN, and UN Women Indonesia. Of course, we view this workshop forum not just as technical enrichment, but rather as our collective effort to strengthen fair and gender-equal violent extremism prevention strategies," said the Head of Bakesbangpol in his speech.

As the objective of this workshop was to formulate gender-sensitive RAN/RAD PE implementation strategies, Fanny from Sekolah Damai Indonesia Bandung, as an organization also involved in the preparation of RAD PE 2020, is committed to fighting in the aspect of prevention. She stated that intolerance is one of the highest contributing factors to terrorism-based violent extremism. Therefore, the prevention efforts carried out by Sekolah Damai Indonesia focus on fostering empathy and tolerance amidst diversity and differences.

"We want to empower young people to cultivate respect, empathy, and tolerance for each other, especially when seeing the many diversities and differences," said Fanny.

Vivi Normasari, Secretary-General of the Survivor Family Foundation, stated that she felt happy and enlightened by this workshop.

"It turns out that from the results of this workshop, there was a finding that Kesbangpol has provided services to victim survivors in the Bandung, Astana Anyar area," said Vivi.

Furthermore, the Survivor Family Foundation will be more active so that this RAD PE can truly be felt by survivor friends not only in West Java Province, especially Bandung, but also in the districts.

The Head of Bakesbangpol stated that efforts to prevent violent extremism require commitment and collaboration from various stakeholders, as well as from academics, communities, entrepreneurs, and the media. Moving forward, Bakesbangpol will bring about collaboration in a more technical context.
