The Efforts and Enthusiasm of Over 200 Teachers from Across Indonesia in Fostering a Safe and Comfortable School Environment

“Education is not just about intelligence, but about how character is formed. Because education without character is deeply flawed.”

- Dr. Rita Pranawati, S.S., M.A. Special Staff to the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education for Inclusive Education and Educational Equity in Underdeveloped, Frontier, and Outermost (3T) Regions

Creating safe and comfortable schools is not just about enforcing new rules, but about how schools can become spaces that truly support students’ growth and development. Amid challenges such as bullying, violence, and the growing influence of the digital world on children’s lives, schools play a vital role in building character and fostering a sense of safety among students.

This spirit was evident in the webinar “From Policy to Practice: School Readiness in Implementing Ministry of Education Regulation No. 6 of 2026,” organized by PeaceGen Academy to commemorate National Education Day. Attended by over 200 teachers from various regions across Indonesia, this webinar served as a collaborative learning space to understand how a safe and comfortable school culture can be realized through concrete and consistent steps.

The webinar featured Ms. Dr. Rita Pranawati, S.S., M.A., Special Staff to the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education for Inclusive Education and Educational Equity in Underdeveloped, Frontier, and Outermost (3T) Regions, who discussed the importance of character education and a more inclusive approach in building a safe and comfortable school culture. Additionally, Mr. Dede Gumilar, S.Pd., M.M., from the Bandung City Education Office, explained how this policy can be translated into concrete practices within the school environment.

Ministry of Education and Culture Regulation No. 6 of 2026 on Safe and Comfortable School Culture adopts a more holistic and proactive approach. Whereas schools previously tended to act only after incidents occurred, the focus is now on fostering positive habits, strengthening school culture, and early detection to ensure a safe learning environment is established from the outset.

Participants not only gained an understanding of the policy but were also guided to see how schools can become healthy growth environments for students. This includes the importance of fostering safe communication, strengthening character education, and understanding the impact of the digital world and screen time on children’s mental health and behavior.

In this webinar, participants also heard best practices from schools that have begun implementing a safe and comfortable school culture in their daily routines. Ms. Yunis Diah from SMPN 25 Bandung and Ms. Puji from Sekolah Prima Insani Garut shared how change can begin with simple steps, such as fostering warm communication, positive habits, and creating a more supportive learning environment.

One of the inspiring voices in this webinar came from Mr. Konstantinus Aman, a Catholic Religious Education teacher at SMA Negeri 3 Macang Pacar, Manggarai Barat Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. As a teacher actively involved in strengthening character education at his school, he viewed this webinar as a learning space that opened new perspectives on the importance of a safe and comfortable school culture.

According to him, every school faces different challenges and dynamics. Yet amidst these varied conditions, teachers continue to strive to play a role in shaping students’ character through an approach rooted in care and setting a good example.

He also noted that this webinar gave him renewed motivation to keep driving change within the school environment, not just through case management, but through habits and approaches that better support students’ growth and development.

“A safe and comfortable school culture cannot be built overnight. But it can be gradually realized through consistent practice and collaborative effort,” he explained.

In addition to gaining new insights, the teachers also found the materials helpful because they were closely aligned with real-world situations and easy to understand. The open discussion forum allowed participants to learn from one another and reflect on the challenges they face at their respective schools.

Ultimately, this webinar served as a reminder that creating a safe and comfortable school is not the responsibility of just one party. Collaboration between teachers, schools, parents, and policymakers is essential so that students can learn in an environment where they feel safe, valued, and supported in their growth.

Because a good school is not just a place to pursue grades, but also a place where character, empathy, and a sense of humanity grow together.
