About the Project
Pondok Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Garut, one of the largest pesantrens under Muhammadiyah's guidance, implemented the Training Happy Tanpa Bully from PeaceGen as a tangible step in creating a safe and bullying-free environment. This program aims to build awareness and skills among educators and pesantren staff to prevent and address bullying cases, ensuring the development of morally upright, intelligent, and compassionate santri.
Strategy
Darul Arqam Pesantren faces significant challenges related to bullying due to its students coming from various regions with different cultural backgrounds and characteristics. This often leads to misunderstandings that can result in bullying, whether intentional or not. Additionally, there is still an old paradigm where harsh discipline is seen as an effective method for educating santri. As a solution, the pesantren collaborated with PeaceGen to conduct the Training Happy Tanpa Bully. This training involved 85 pesantren staff and employed creative approaches such as board games, anti-bullying campaigns, and evaluation sessions to ensure sustainable implementation.
Results & Impact
After the training, there was a shift in mindset among the pesantren educators. Mr. Ahmad Sauqi, the Mudir (Leader) of the Pesantren, realized that the harsh discipline methods previously considered effective actually needed to be revised
“As older generations, we thought that a teaching model focused on harsh discipline was successful, but after listening to the presentation from PeaceGen, our mindset has changed, and we are confident that this is the wrong approach and needs improvement,” said Mr. Mudir.
As a follow-up, the pesantren developed clear SOPs to handle bullying cases, including prevention, identification, and support for both victims and perpetrators. Additionally, the pesantren launched a social media campaign, Happy Tanpa Bully, as part of the 2024 Islamic Holidays (PHBI) celebrations to raise awareness among santri and educators.
