Pondok Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Garut has students from various regions. They interact for 24 hours, both in dormitories and schools. Based on these conditions, students are very vulnerable to being involved in misunderstandings about bullying because of differences in character, as expressed by Ms Dian Hadiati, a counseling teacher and Head of Madrasah at the female aliyah level,
"Darul Arqam students come from various regions and have various characters, so sometimes there is a misunderstanding between students regarding interactions that are considered bullying. In the end, it makes them uncomfortable in the pesantren. It can happen because there is no awareness from his friends or even the teacher. So, it must be straightened out," said Ms Dian.
The problem of bullying is a challenge Pondok Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Garut faces. Not only students but also educators must change the mindset that disciplinary techniques in a harsh way are unwise methods; normalizing bullying actions is not correct, considering bullying actions only occur when there are victims who are physically or mentally affected when they are not, and considering all jokes as actions that are not considered bullying.
Bullying can disrupt the harmony of students and previous educators and the teaching and learning process. Therefore, it is necessary to create a safe environment by providing an in-depth understanding of bullying and strategies and techniques to prevent and overcome bullying cases so that Pesantren employees who play a crucial role in creating this safe environment can be better prepared to face and overcome these situations in the future.
For this purpose, Pondok Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Garut collaborated with PeaceGeneration Indonesia to implement "Training Happy Tanpa Bully" in the boarding school.
How was the "Training Happy Tanpa Bully" process at Pondok Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Garut?
"Training Happy Tanpa Bully" was attended by 85 Pondok Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Garut employees. The series of events began with anti-bullying training using creative media, namely board games, anti-bullying campaigns, and evaluation and follow-up.
What is the Impact of “Training Happy Tanpa Bully” at Pondok Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Garut?
After "Training Happy Tanpa Bully" was implemented, Mr Ahmad Sauqi, Mudir or the Head Pesantren Darul Arqam, revealed that his mindset about disciplining students with harsh methods changed, making him believe it was the wrong way and needed to be corrected.
"If we as the older generation think that the teaching model that prioritizes harsh discipline is something that is considered successful, but after listening to the presentation from PeaceGen, our mindset has changed and believes that it is the wrong way, and we need to fix it," said Mudir.
Mr Dudi also revealed that after the training, he became aware that there are many types of bullying, not only limited to bully cases whose impact can be seen with the eyes.
"I came to know that there are 20 types of bullying, and there are small impacts that are not visible to the eye and are only visible when we dig deeper. I also know how to distinguish between jokes and bullying," said Mr. Dudi.
How is the Follow-up of "Training Happy Tanpa Bully" at Pondok Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Garut?
As a follow-up to this training, Pondok Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Garut made a clear SOP for bullying actions in the pesantren. The goal is to have a clear flow of handling, from teachers campaigning for bullying and identifying bullying to preventing, handling, and treating victims and perpetrators.
Furthermore, Darul Arqam also invited the whole education department to conduct a social media campaign to end bullying in the school environment. The campaign was part of Darul Arqam’s preparation for Islamic Holy Day Commemorations 2024 to spread awareness to end bullying through a creative media approach.
